The Pedro Pons estate was donated to the University of Barcelona by Dr Agustí Pedro Pons. The building, also known as Can Mestres, is recognised by many passers-by for its sgraffiti (wall art), which were probably added at a later date to the original 18th-century home, built on the site of an earlier 16th-century farmhouse.
The sgraffiti can be found on the northern and southern facades. One includes a sundial dated 1776. A weathervane on the upper roof features Patufet, a Thumbelina-like character from one of the most famous Catalan folktales. Made of iron, its resistant gears have allowed it to function for over 50 years, and on windy days it spins rapidly.
