“The risks they plan on the global economy are as diverse as they are relevant and their eventual implications are far beyond the strictly economic or business spheres. On the one hand, economic growth has been the lowest since 2009 in 2019, reopening discussions about “secular stagnation”. International trade and the expansion of global value chains experienced a slowdown even before the escalation of trade tensions since early 2018. Doubts about the extent to which the financial fragility that led a decade ago to the crisis had been “repaired” has reopened in view of the evolution of debt volume and quality, evaluating unimaginable scenarios a few years ago such as the persistence of negative interest rates or the emergence of private global digital currencies. Scientific-technological advances raise, in first term, as many hopes for progress and secondly, as misgivings about how their “dividends” and human-machine relations will be distributed, accentuating socio-political fears and misgivings. At the time, concerns about sustainability dimensions advance in public preoccupations and agendas. Having clear diagnoses is especially important in facing complex realities as those now faced, as well as evaluating the polyhedral scopes of their implications, as a basis for proposing lines of adequacy and action. This is the ambitious goal of the 2020 Macaya Conference.”
