PUBLICATION No. 16: CHINA TODAY: KEYS TO UNDERSTANDING ITS POSITION ON THE INTERNATIONAL STAGE

21 Apr 2022

What is China’s place on the current international political stage? This volume aims to answer that question with a view not only to encouraging debate, but also to spreading knowledge amongst all readers seeking to learn more and to understand the complex international society in which we operate.

In the following pages, various specialists in the field analyse the causes of the Asian giant’s rise and the uncertainties surrounding it. The authors had the opportunity to present their ideas first as speakers at the conference on China held on 27 March 2014 by CEI International Affairs and the Confucius Institute of Barcelona in collaboration with the ”la Caixa” Foundation’s Palau Macaya and Casa Asia.

Synopsis

nineteenth century, China has risen to become one of the five permanent members of the Security Council, a nuclear power and one of the leaders of the global economy. It also holds large amounts of public debt issued by both other global economic powerhouses and small and medium-sized states. Its output isso vast, it is often referred to as the world’s factory, and its companies are expanding around the globe: in Africa, Latin America, Europe, etc. What is behind this great leap? Where is China headed? Can it transform its economic might into political power? Does China really aim to be the new global hegemon? Can it be? What role does it play in the regional political arena? Where does China stand in terms of the dynamics of influence and power struggles that shape today’s complex and asymmetrical multipolar society? These are just some of the questions addressed in this volume by authors from a variety of backgrounds (academic, diplomatic, business and politics), all of whom are keen observers of China’s economic rise and its attendant uncertainties.
